Kelly Clarkson makes Grammy history, launches SiriusXM channel
"chemistry" earns Kelly Clarkson another Grammy nomination, and she's now (kinda) officially working in radio.
Hey fellow Clarkstan! 👋 Welcome to NOTHING BUT CLARKSON — a newsletter all about Emmy and Grammy winner (and rad human) Kelly Clarkson. This week, some news on the 2024 Grammy nominations and an exciting SiriusXM announcement.
‘chemistry’ earns Kelly Clarkson another Grammy nomination
On Friday, November 10, we learned that ‘chemistry’ has earned a nomination for the 2024 Grammys. Kelly Clarkson’s critically acclaimed 10th studio album is one of five nominees for Best Pop Vocal Album, along with Olivia Rodrigo, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus.
It’s a STACKED category, and predicting Kelly’s actual chances of taking home the Grammy is gonna be hard. She is competing with some of the hottest and best-selling pop stars today.
That said, Kelly has a long history with this category: in fact, with this nomination, she is once again the most nominated artist ever in this category. (Before the nominations were announced, Kelly already held the record along with Ariana Grande and Justin Timberlake.) Kelly has previously won this category for ‘Breakaway’ and ‘Stronger’ — two other fan favorites with a single word, so I’d say the chances of her doing it again in 2024 are pretty good. 😜
Honestly I’m a little bit disappointed that Kelly didn’t pick up more nominations. ‘chemistry’ is her more personal record yet; it’s also her most experimental and confident project to date. I really wished the Recording Academy recognized the album more for its artistry and vulnerability. It is, after all, Kelly’s best work so far.
Kelly Clarkson has previously won the Best Pop Vocal Album category at the Grammys for ‘Breakaway’ and ‘Stronger.’
Of course, the lack of a massive radio hit and bigger commercial success probably hurt Kelly’s chances a bit. But I was still hoping that with Kelly’s reputation and bigger fame these days (she’s literally everywhere!), more Grammy voters would take notice.
The good news is that given how massive Miley, Olivia and Taylor are today, they could split the votes. Kelly is also the oldest artist nominated in this category, so hopefully some of the more mature voters will lean more towards her. Ed Sheeran is the dark horse. He is a Grammy darling, although I doubt the Recording Academy wants another blowback if it gives the award to the only man nominated in the category. (You may remember that this happened in 2018. lol)
Anyway, as I shared on Twitter, I’m hoping for manifesting a “Piece by Piece (Healed Version)” / “Rock Hudson” medley from Kelly at the 2024 Grammys. It would be headline-grabbing, and also potentially a good way to launch “Rock Hudson” as the third single. 🤞🏽🤞🏽 A guy can dream!!
Kelly Clarkson launches her own SiriusXM channel
As if she’s not busy enough already, Kelly Clarkson announced earlier this week that she’s launching a SiriusXM channel. Aptly titled Kelly Clarkson Connection, the channel will feature some of Kelly’s favorite music.
More from the press release:
The new exclusive channel welcomes listeners into Kelly’s world. When tuning in, you will be surrounded by the music she loves, music she’s inspired by, and the stories behind the music from Kelly’s two-decade long catalog of award-winning hits. Besides the stories behind the songs in her own catalog, Kelly will take listeners on a journey through her favorite music and share insights into her favorite artists. Listeners will also hear from members of Kelly’s band, and lots of on-air celebration of Christmas.
On Twitter, fans have reported hearing some Kelly Clarkson music already on the channel, including deep cuts like “If I Can’t Have You,” “Dirty Little Secret” and “Breaking Your Own Heart.”
